Event Spaces, Intercontinental Hotel Dubai Festival City
The brief was to create a contemporary event space to host weddings, conferences and high profile public gatherings such as the flagship Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, which is held here every year.
To achieve this goal, the interior scheme is monochromatic, playing with texture and layering rather than colour. This creates a refined palette that gives clients flexibility to accommodate branding and colour preferences for each event.
To give the area a sense of place, the space planning and materials – such as the custom designed carpets – are inspired by the sinuous lines found in the aquatic forms of the Creek, which the space overlooks.
The main event space takes full advantage of the triple-height windows overlooking the Creek, flooding the space with natural light. By contrast, some of the internal spaces have low ceilings and little natural light. To counter this, we created an illusion of height by installing a mirror-backed chandelier suspended from the ceiling.
BBC Radio 4 recorded a feature on the site when the space was being built, interviewing Pallavi for a feature on women architects in the Gulf. You can find it here.
