Bharat Indian Restaurant
Khobar, Saudi Arabia
Under construction. Completion Q2 2019
The brief was to create a flagship outlet for a small, existing network of Indian restaurants in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia – a design that would become the template for future expansion.
We created a design catering to the young, modern Saudi population of Khobar and surrounding area. This audience has been exposed to international design and cultural influences, through travel and social media, and demands a very different dining experience from their parents.
The palette took inspiration from the cuisine: turmeric, deep mustard and red chilli. We wanted to give the space a garden feel, and achieved this in a number of ways. As well as widespread incorporation of natural plants, we worked with the existing skeleton of the building, which has a tented roof structure. We used water features throughout, cleverly built into the interior architecture of the space, making them part of the fabric rather than an obtrusive object.
Privacy is an important design feature; different zones within the space offer varying levels of seclusion. High-sided booths are designed to turn their back on each other to accommodate women and families who want greater privacy. But there is also free seating and a buffet bar for those customers comfortable with an open environment. All space planning decisions were taken keeping in mind the client’s goal of maximizing the number of covers and, by extension, revenue.
