Mrs B Salon
The central concept of this luxurious beauty salon is 'androgyny' - the glamorous yet sometimes controversial fashion technique of infusing feminine glamour with hints of masculinity. We were asked to maximize the floor plate and create segregated areas for different functions including hair wash, styling, manicure, spa, pedicure, makeup, reception + waiting area, staff pantry and storage – a very tall order for a tiny space!
The femininity shines through in the soft wood tones, delicate marble, leather accents and flattering lighting. Yet the elements of bold masculinity are unmistakable - particularly in the striking barbershop chairs.
The real genius of the space is not in the design language but in the space planning. It's a master of efficiency, maximizing the number of treatment spaces without feeling cramped by creating a mezzanine floor. The floor plate is zoned without walls so when you walk through the space it doesn’t feel small or like a series of rooms. There are large scale architectural details like the screened door or glass partitions that divide the space, allowing light to shine through, and a visual connection between the different areas at all times.
